Stay Safe and Steady – Prevent Falls
Each year, 1 in 3 adults age 65 or older experiences a fall. Falls can cause cuts, broken bones and head injuries. Many people develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobility, loss of physical fitness and increased risk of falling. Stay safe and steady by using the following tips and resources.
- Talk to your doctor about preventing falls or treating problems with balance or walking.
- Have your vision and hearing checked regularly.
- Review your prescription and over-the-counter medications with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Be aware of medication side effects, some may cause dizziness.
- Always review your over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin and cold medicines, with your doctor or pharmacist to avoid interactions.
- Stay active and engage in daily exercise.
- Try to exercise for 30 minutes every day. You can break it into small chunks to make it more manageable.
- No time to head to the gym? Try stretching and strength exercises. They are free and easy to do at home.
- Make your home safer by reducing tripping hazards.
- Remove throw rugs and keep pathways clear.
- Keep your home well lit, and use nightlights in bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways.
- Use non-slip grips in your tub or shower.
- Install grab bars and railings if necessary.
